Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I handle transportation?

There are several ways. The Relay will provide each team with detailed driving instructions. There are designated transition areas on the route where runners can use bathrooms, get a snack etc. Most teams meet at a designated spot or at the Finish in Asbury Park and then drive to the Start in Seaside Heights in one car. The first runner then runs the first leg and the rest of the team drives to the first transition area where they wait for the runner to arrive. The second runner then takes the baton and the first runner can use the facilities at the transition area to change clothes and get a snack. The team then drives to the second transition area and repeats the process. Some teams break the route into sections so everyone does not have to go to the start. This requires a degree of planning to make sure that the runners arrive at the designated transition area before the incoming runner. We will have limited transportation available in the event a runner gets stranded or needs a ride back to an area.

2. How are results tabulated?

Although we use a staggered start the results are calculated based on the actual time it takes the team to complete the entire course. Teams are urged to start at a realistic start time. If you leave too early you may run ahead of our planned support and if you leave too late you will finish too late for the awards. Pleas be realistic on providing us your estimated pace. If your team changes significantly let us know so we can adjust your start time. Please do this prior to the day of the event as we need to enter this information into our database to facilitate scoring.

3. Who do I make checks out to?

Checks for the team Registration should be made out the JSRC Relay. Donations should be made out to Special Olympics.

4. When do donations need to be turned in?

For your team name to be entered on the event shirt we need your donation by April 1st so we can provide it to the T-Shirt company. The larger the donation the larger your placement on the back of the shirt. Other donations can be turned in any time including the day of the Relay. We will have a person who will be collecting the pledges at the Finish at the Convention Hall. You can always mail in any late donations to our PO Box - JSRC Relay, PO Box 7492, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702.

5. I raised money - when do I receive my award?

We order awards atter the Relay is completed and we know the quantity required. It generally takes about 6 to 8 weeks after the Relay to receive it. We will either deliver it or mail to your team captain.

6. How do we get our T-Shirts?

T-Shirts will be available at the finish area at the Convention Hall. We will have the shirts bundled for each team. So only one person should go to pick it up to avoid a long line.

7. I signed up for the Relay but have not received a confirmation what should i do?

We will be sending out information packets to all pre-registered teams around April 1st. So you should receive your packet in the mail the first week in April. In the packet will be instructions to teams, your bib numbers, waivers and your starting time. Instructions will also be posted on the Relay Web Site by April 1.

8. Can I sign up the day of the event?

We strongly discourage that since teams need to receive instructions and we need to set the team up with a start time. Also, we have a limit on the number of teams. Last year we exceeded the limit and we may need to cut off the number of teams - so teams are encouraged to register early. On line registration is available either at Active.com or JerseyRunner.com

9. Is the course traffic controlled?

NO - the course is primarily along the ocean on boardwalks and ocean front roads. However, there are areas where you will be running with traffic. Please be aware and stay to the side in those areas. Also there are railroad crossings - so please obey the crossing signals. Any team caught disobeying the signals will be disqualified and will forfeit their event shirt.

10. Is the course marked? Can I get lost?

The course will be marked with lots of signs and there will be course marshals along the route at key locations. In the unlikely event that you do go off course just head back toward the ocean and go North toward Asbury Park. Any other questions?
